Former chairman of the Committee of Experts (CoE) that drafted the 2010 Constitution Nzamba Kitonga is dead.
He is said to have collapsed while attending a funeral at his home area of Mutito in Kitui East Constituency and died while being rushed to hospital.
His young brother Muthusi Kitonga said he became unconscious at the funeral and his wife who had accompanied him, evacuated him.
Mr Kitonga who is a former MP for the Constituency said, the former LSK chairman, may have had a heart attack.
"It was an emergency that we summoned the Amref wing to evacuate him to Nairobi for specialised treatment but all our frantic efforts didn't bear fruit" he told Sunday Nation on phone.
He said his wife drove him from Mutito, about 75 kilometres from Kitui Town, and decided to proceed to Nairobi when air rescue help wasn't forthcoming.
His condition deteriorated upon reaching Machakos Town and was pronounced dead at Shalom Hospital.
The senior council spent the Saturday at his Mutito home in Kitui east and he attended the funeral of his Cousin. He became ill at around 1 pm and his young brother Muthusi Kitonga tried to get him airlifted to Nairobi all in vain.
The family decided to use a car to rush him to Nairobi but by the time they got to Machakos his condition got critical and decided to get him to Shalom Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body has since been moved from Shalom Hospital Machakos to Montenzuma Machakos for a postmortem to establish the cause of death.
Several leaders have condoled with the family following the passing away of Nzamba Kitonga and here is what some had to say.
“I have learnt with great sadness about the demise of Senior Counsel Nzamba Kitonga, one of Kenya’s most distinguished legal practitioners and a key pillar in the country’s constitutional journey. May God give his family the fortitude to bear this heavy loss. ” Chief Justice David Maraga said.
“Philip Nzamba Kitonga was a fine intellectual and a legal giant who was deeply devoted to the democratic process, bringing about much-needed reforms to our country through the new Constitution. ” Deputy President William Ruto said.
“Our condolences to the family and friends of Nzamba Kitonga SC. A gentleman and one of the top legal minds in Kenya. Rest In Peace our dear friend and senior.” Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior added.
“I have received the sad news of the passing on of Nzamba Kitonga with a heavy heart. My condolences to his wife, children and the entire family. Kitui has lost an illustrious son of great repute. Kenya has lost an accomplished constitutional scholar and leader. ” Ngilu in a statement mourned the lawyer.
