Residents of Karatina in Nyeri County are trying to come to terms with the killing of a woman and two children in broad daylight in a shop.
Mercy Muthoni, 35, her 10-year-old daughter Claire Wanjira and a niece, also aged 10, were all slain in what police have described as gruesome murders.
The niece had been sent by Wanjira’s sister to check why she had not opened her shop, but unfortunately also fell victim.
It is believed that the young girl found the culprits in action, and they also trapped her inside the house.
The husband of the slain woman reportedly fainted after he saw the bodies of his loved ones.
According to eyewitnesses, the woman and her child had on Thursday morning, 22nd October, been seen basking in the sun.
“In the morning, she and her daughter were just outside her shop. The husband said he found them frothing at the mouths and he did not understand what had happened,” a neighbour said.
Nyeri County Police Commander Adiel Nyange said the three could have been strangled to death.
“According to a report from the scene of crime, they were strangled because all had ropes around their necks. The woman was tied beside her bed,” police boss Nyange said.
One suspect has been arrested and he is helping police with investigations as those, who are still at large, are sought.
The bodies were taken to Karatina Hospital Mortuary.
