Garissa University Terror Convict Committs Suicide in Prison

A convict serving life sentence for the 2015 Garrissa University terror attack has been found dead at the Kamiti Maximum Prison.

According to prison officers, Rashid Mberesero, 26, committed suicide using a piece of blanket that he was using in the cells.

The Tanzanian national’s body was found hanging in a window’s metal grill shortly after he had already taken his life.

Officials said that the incident happened at about 3pm on Friday, 27th November, after all the prisoners had finished having a meal.

The deceased and two others, Mohammed Abikar and Hassan Edin Hassan were convicted on 3rd of July 2019 over the April 2015 incident that left 148 people dead.

The attack also left 83 people with serious injuries, with their families still scarred even to date.

The three were found guilty of conspiracy to commit a terrorist attack staged by the Al-shabaab terror group.

Of the three terror suspects, the deceased was slapped with the heaviest sentence as he was found at the scene of crime and could not explain his presence.

He had appealed the verdict at the Milimani Law Courts and his case was still ongoing.

His co-accused were given a 41-year jail term each.

The body of the deceased has been taken to the city mortuary.
